- Family doctors certified by the American Board of Family
Practice are usually better trained to handle your family’s
medical needs. Don’t hesitate to ask. The certificate is probably
hanging on the office wall.
- an easy to use after hours call system should be in
place, such that you can reach your doctor easily. You may avoid a
costly time consuming emergency room visit with a little over the
phone advice.
- Ask if there is a problem with the doctor or nurse returning
calls promptly.
- Pay attention to how well your new doctor listens to you.
Possibly 50% of a diagnosis is based on what you tell the doctor.
- Beware of doctors who avoid touching you. It is unlikely that
an accurate diagnosis can be made only by visual inspection.
- Watch out for herding. This is an old “keep’em busy
technique”. You wait in several waiting rooms and are herded back
and forth to x ray, the lab, consultation rooms and exam rooms to
“keep you busy”.
- observe your doctor’s staff. They should listen carefully,
freely offer help, and respond to your questions and telephone calls
promptly.
- Beware of the voice mailbox. This is not an effective way to
communicate with your doctor. Your non-emergency call should be
answered within 8 hours during normal office times.
- schedule a “get to know this doctor” office visit and write down
all of your questions. Most doctors don’t charge for these visits.
