Most persons who are depressed, are usually living in the past or have fear of the future.  In order to fight the blues, one must forget the past, live for the present and avoid worrying about the future.  That is not to say that we should not learn from the past or plan for our future.  We should practice only the positive aspects of each.

Here are a few tips on just doing that !

  • Make a list of past events that cause you concern.  After each event, summarize what you have learned in a positive manner.  Then put the list away in a drawer. If you get these past problems on your mind again, simply pull out the list and review the positives.  After awhile, you will come to realize how unimportant past events are.  You can’t change the past.
  • Make another list of all the good things you’ve accomplished and a summary of how you did so.  This is a list of your strengths in life and can be reviewed when you need to have a quick picker upper.
  • Try to help someone who is not as well off as yourself.  Nothing opens our eyes better than to realize others may be in worse shape.
  • Plan for your future by outlining what you wish to do this week, next week, next month, six months, one year, and two years from now.  This will give you a temporary roadmap for life and goals to look forward.
  • Smile at yourself in the mirror and laugh about your shortcomings every morning.  Celebrate even small accomplishments, because you are indeed worthy of everything you work so hard for and deserve in life.
