A lot of ADHD’ers find it easier to lie than to tell the truth.
Underlying longstanding problems with self-esteem and poor self-image
are the reason that lying becomes so easy. As ADHD’ers try to cope with
rapid changes in their social and physical surroundings, they develop
lying as a means to cover up and make excuses for inability to
concentrate and organize. These behavioral changes begin in early
childhood when we fail to recognize the ADHD prone child. As he or she
fails to meet parent’s expectations, lies are concocted to cover up for
disappointment. Most ADHD’ers truly want to please everyone, so it’s
difficult for them to admit mistakes and shortcomings. Therefore, they
lie to avoid self-hurt to an already fragile ego and self-image. After
years of doing so, it becomes almost second nature as a means of
survival. The pain of even verbal rejection from others in times of
failure is so great, that the ADHD’er would rather lie now, and deal
with the consequences later. This habit rapidly removes them from the
immediate threat of criticism and confrontation.
