The School Token Reward System (STRS) is a prize system for encouraging spontaneous good behavior based on immediate positive reinforcement of observed desirable behavior.  Similar behavioral programs have been in use in various parts of the United States for the past two to three years, and have been highly successful.

Here’s an example of how the system works:

Each school designs a milk bottle cap type token about the size of a half dollar coin.  It may be plastic or cardboard, but must be durable and difficult to duplicate.  The imprint should carry the school logo and the words “valuable or redeemable token” or “good deeds token.”  A reward points system based on accumulated tokens exchanged for “prizes” must be established in writing and posted.

Prizes must be awarded based on the degree of difficulty in saving the tokens, but must be a reachable goal.  Most schools use pencils, rulers, character labeled notebooks, book bags, and specially printed T-shirts.

Stickers and small toys do not work well in this system.  Items must be unique and not available for purchase in the school store or a local store, so that perceived value is high.
